Why Annamalai Quit the BJP: The 18-Month Rift

The real reasons behind K. Annamalai's June 5, 2026 BJP exit: the AIADMK alliance, 18 months of disagreements, and what his letter said.

K. Annamalai’s June 5, 2026 exit ended six years with the BJP. Here’s what drove it.

The AIADMK alliance

The sharpest disagreement: the BJP’s pre-poll alliance with the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, a tie-up Annamalai had consistently opposed. For a leader who’d built his brand on an independent, corruption-fighting image, sharing a platform with the AIADMK was, in his view, a compromise too far.

18 months of friction

In his resignation letter, Annamalai wrote of “multiple conversations with the top leadership and the disagreements I have expressed over the last 18 months” about the way forward for “growth-oriented and culturally rooted politics in Tamil Nadu.” He’d first told the leadership of his intent in December 2025 — and was asked to stay until after the state elections.

The final week

Days of suspense, meetings in Delhi with Amit Shah, Nitin Nabin, and B.L. Santhosh — then the resignation, accepted by Nabin on June 5. The TN BJP’s response: “no loss.” BJP state vice-president Karu Nagarajan promptly resigned too, backing Annamalai.
